Intro

This year our message to Western Australians is “What are you really gambling with?”

This annual campaign helps build awareness of the warning signs of gambling-related harm and the help that is available for you or someone you love.

If you are worried about yourself or a loved one’s gambling behaviour, taking the 30-second test on the Gamble Aware website is a great way to check if gambling is becoming a problem.

Warning signs may include:

  • spending more time or money than you can afford to lose
  • arguing with family and friends after gambling
  • borrowing money or selling assets to gamble.

The WA Government funds Gambling Help WA which is a free service for those affected by gambling-related harm, their partners, and families.

Last financial year Western Australians accessed more than 3,700 counselling sessions from gambling harm support services.

Among those helped by support service providers:

  • more than 600 were first time users of the service
  • 65% of those seeking assistance were male
  • males between 30 and 49 years and females 50 years and older were most likely to seek out help
  • parents and family members continued to seek help for loved ones
  • more than 100 financial counselling sessions were provided.

Support is readily available, and we encourage you to share information about these services within your networks if you suspect someone might be silently struggling. There is no shame in getting support.
