The funding boost to RSPCA WA’s Pet Sterilisation Program will assist eligible owners on low incomes to comply with new Stop Puppy Farming laws that, once they come into effect next year, will require dogs to be sterilised after 2 years of age and the current Cat Act requires cats to be sterilised at 6 months of age.
It’s expected the funding will result in the sterilisation of around 1200 dogs and 500 cats.
The 75% discount on sterilisation costs is available at participating vet clinics for WA Seniors Card, Pension Concession Card and Health Care Card holders.
To qualify for the subsidy, expected to start mid-October, owners will need to provide a valid concession card, proof of identification and proof of ownership of the pet being sterilised.
There are many benefits to having dogs and cats de-sexed, including preventing unwanted litters that can create many animal welfare issues. Sterilised pets are also happier, calmer, healthier, less likely to roam and saves pet owners money in the long-term.
