Known as one of the world’s great long distance walk trails, the Bibbulmun Track stretches 1000 kilometres from Kalamunda in the Perth Hills to Albany on the south coast.

The Bibbulmun Track Foundation received $25,000 via the Department’s WA Hiking Participation Grant Program to celebrate the milestone.

The foundation held several events including an end-to-end walk with town celebrations along the way, a virtual hike and school challenge.

These proved to be a huge success.

In total, 437 people took part in the virtual hike, together walking a massive 193,813 kilometres. That’s equivalent to 12 times around Australia!

More than 90 per cent of participants said they felt inspired to hike, or hike more of the Bibbulmun Track in real life after taking part in the virtual challenge.

Meanwhile, others were lucky enough to join in the celebrations by hiking the track in person.

Eighty-three people hiked various stages of the end-to-end journey with the youngest participant being 16 and the oldest 73. They were guided by 11 volunteers along the way and had students from seven schools join them for the last few kilometres into town.

Twelve schools took part in the Bibbulmun School Challenge and four schools volunteered their time to help with track maintenance.
