More than 70 stakeholders representing various segments of the industry, committed to enhancing hiking experiences in Western Australia, participated in the workshop to undertake a comprehensive review of the accomplishments of the WA Hiking Strategy.

The strategy, released by DLGSC and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions in 2020, provides the strategic direction for hiking in Western Australia and outlines the opportunities to make our state a destination of choice for hiking experiences.

Participants heard from DLGSC staff and industry experts on progress and achievements made on the strategy, and were involved in consultation sessions that will guide the future direction for the strategy and hiking in WA.

Pleasingly, 80% of the strategy’s outcomes to date have been progressed since its release 3 years ago, and from $570,000 in dedicated Hiking Participation Grant funding provided by DLGSC to support 39 hiking projects, a $1.2 million return on investment has been leveraged across the hiking sector in WA.

DLGSC would like to thank all who attended and provided their invaluable insights and feedback. The workshop will guide future implementation of the strategy, and foster the continued growth in hiking and trail development in Western Australia.
