The redevelopment of the Port Hedland Community Centre has also provided new facilities for the Port Hedland Turf Club. The club will now be able to cater for dance, martial arts, and sport and recreation groups.
The accessible two-storey building includes 2 large function spaces (which can be divided into 4), community spaces, toilets, changerooms, sheltered viewing areas, 2 commercial-grade kitchens, a judging box, broadcast tower and the refurbishment of the existing stables.
The new space will allow the centre to host events, conferences, arts and cultural exhibitions, a provincial racing circuit and other tourism-related events.
The Port Hedland Turf Club will now serve as the emergency evacuation centre for the town should Port Hedland become isolated from South Hedland as a result of an extreme weather event.
The community centre is stage 1 of a larger project planned by the Town of Port Hedland and was co-funded by the town, which contributed $8.7 million towards the project.
