Intro

The framework will better enable local governments to understand the department’s approach towards one of its key roles, compliance regulation.

The framework, which was first published by the Department of Local Government in 2011, will be developed following consultation with the local government sector and other stakeholders.

It will use compliance models in other jurisdictions in its development, mapping best practice.  The department’s Executive Director Local Government Tim Fraser said that the updated framework would provide a higher degree of certainty to local governments about the department’s role and approach to compliance.

“As one of the key deliverables for the department’s strategic Local Government Plan on a Page, this framework will support the State Government’s reform theme of early intervention and assistance for councils,” Tim said.

“It will consider opportunities for innovative approaches to respond to the unique geographical, cultural, and organisational challenges in the Western Australian context.

“The department looks forward to working with Nous, and key stakeholders, to develop the new framework.”

Underpinning the framework will be policies and procedures that guide specific actions and decisions, enabling the department to take a risk-based approach to compliance.

A copy of the current framework is here. More information will be made available regarding future consultation with local governments on the framework.
