Landmark legislation to strengthen compliance powers

The Perth Casino Royal Commission found flaws in operating behaviour and levels of compliance monitoring and enforcement, so late last month it was great to see the Parliament of Western Australia pass legislation to address the findings of the detailed probe.

For the Gaming and Wagering Commission, the Gambling Legislation Amendment Act 2024 will considerably enhance the commission’s enforcement powers and create a more rigorous compliance framework.

What will it mean from a sector and community perspective? Here are just a few of the key points:

  • Increases penalties across the board, substantially for casino gaming and operations plus common gaming houses.
  • Gives the commission the ability to use infringement notices as an alternative to prosecution.
  • Paves the way for certain types of interactive gambling service providers whose base of operations is in Western Australia, to be licensed in WA.
