Kimberley athletes among those to benefit from community sporting grants
Five Kimberley sporting groups are among 17 groups receiving funds under the latest rounds of the Active Regional Communities grants program and the North West Travel Subsidy initiative.
- Regional sport and recreation groups to receive $38,835 to boost skills and assist with travel costs
- Kimberley athletics, taekwondo, gymnastics, basketball and football groups among 17 to receive funding
Initiatives to be funded include:
- assisting athletes in Derby to participate in Athletics West programs as well as an opportunity to travel to Broome to take part in the North West Championships ($5000);
- mentoring new taekwondo trainers in Kununurra ($2500);
- assisting Kununurra Gymnastics Club to train new coaches ($2500);
- enabling the Broome Basketball Association to develop 12 referees as part of the Broome Basketball Carnival ($2000); and
- helping members of the Kununurra Soccer Association with travel costs to enable them to attend professional development activities in Perth hosted by Football West ($2500).
The Active Regional Communities grants program aims to increase the opportunities for regional people to participate in sport and active-recreation activities in regional Western Australia.
The North West Travel Subsidy aims to assist young athletes living in the Kimberley, Pilbara and Gascoyne regions.
Both initiatives are administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.
